Perhaps he needed to have that conversation with Anton to wake up to the truth. With a new lens, Dylan focused on the problem at hand.
A partner. He needed a partner, but who could that be?
For the next three days, Dylan made a list of all the current agents, describing their weaknesses and strengths. There weren't many, and he began by crossing out those who had good relationships with their current partners because he knew that breaking them up would not end up well for either of them. That only left him with the one vampire in the agency who worked alone, Bryan Bell. He didn't like or dislike Bryan but knew their partnership wouldn't last. It made him wonder how the rest had found each other and how they stayed together.
Dylan then wondered what was it about Bryan - and Anton - that Lucius allowed them to work alone. His presumptuous maker had worked alone all of his life, except when he'd trained him, and no one seemed to doubt his humanity.
It was pointless to waste his time with the others. It was clear the problem was with him, not them. He needed to find someone who was willing to work with him. Someone willing to give him a chance and who could keep up with him. It wouldn't be easy.
Maybe it was time to look outside the agency. Logging into the computer, he accessed the civilian database. In it, he began to screen those vampires who had chosen to pretend to live regular lives. Perhaps one of them would be willing to leave everything behind to hunt werewolves with him.
After days of failure, Dylan contemplated giving up. Maybe he would survive as a civilian. Or, what if he traveled to another country? There were agencies similar to his outside of the United States, too. All he had to do was learn their rules and...
That made him think about his favorite werewolf hunter. This brought back an important memory.
Perhaps his ideal partner wasn't in the country, but he knew who was. He'd met her once before and she had the correct genetic make-up to become a part of the elite. If she agreed to join him, chances were she'd be as good - or better - than any other vampire. Odds were she had inherited the sixth sense.
When they had last seen each other, she's been but a child. She wouldn't recognize him now and he could introduce himself as someone new. All he had to do was convince her she should join him. Perhaps he could find a way to persuade her. Get to know her, get her to know him. Get a little personal. It would be hard, but possible. There was only one way to know. He had to see her. He had to talk to her. He needed a moment with her to try.
If only he remembered her name. He’d known it for a while, but somehow he'd forgotten it. How old would she be now? An adult for sure.
